Blue Heritage Plaque.
Crabtree's first factory in Walsall
In 1919 John Ashworth Crabtree chose a disused leather works in Walsall as the place to manufacture his revolutionary 'Quick Make - Quick Break' lighting switch. The company was extemely sucessful and within ten years was employing over 1,000 people in a new purpose built factory named Lincoln Works on the Broadway. The company went on to become Walsall's largest private sector employer and is subject of the recently published book 'The Crabtree Story' which chronicles the company history from 1919 to the present day.
At 6.30pm on Thursday 24th October 2013 'The Crabtree Society' recognised the importance the company has been to the town of Walsall by unveiling a blue heritage plaque on the wall of Lyndon House Hotel, Upper Rushall Street, Walsall. The very building in which the company started almost 100 years ago.
This event may be of interest to anyone who was involed in any way with the company, as an employee, a supplier or just interested in local history. Following the plaque unveiling there was a social evening, where ex-colleagues were able to meet again and an exhibition of Crabtree products.
